Known the world over as the father of ‘lateral thinking’, Edward de Bono originally coined the phrase in his book ‘The Use of Lateral Thinking’ (1967) in which he defines it as a method of thinking concerned with changing concepts and perception.

Vertical vs. lateral thinking
Dr. Edward de Bono divides thinking into two methods.
He calls one “vertical thinking,” which uses the processes of logic—the traditional, historical method (= type of thinking established by the Greek Gang of Three (Socrates, Plato and Aristotle)
He calls the other “lateral thinking,” which involves disrupting an apparent thinking sequence and arriving at the solution from another angle. It gives us the gift of creativity.
